Diffusion dialysis (DD) is an ion-exchange membrane separation process which can be applied for the separation and recovery of free acid from waste solutions containing acid contaminated by their salts.

LACTOSE BASED UF PERMEATE DEMINERALIZATION
After ultrafiltration of whey, up to 95% of the solution is rejected as permeate despite its high lactose content. The reason for rejection is a very high mineral content from 9% up to 12 % ODB and high acidity after the whey is filtrated.
By processing of the UF permeate with electrodialysis you can produce an edible food-grade lactose for further use in confectionery, bakery or animal feed. That means that you can expand your product portfolio and increase your revenue by utilizing a by-product of cheese production.
The electrodialysis process also minimizes the evaporator and spray dryer scaling issues of an untreated UF permeate. MOTHER LIQUOR DEMINERALIZATION
Delactosed whey (DLW) or Mother Liquor (ML) is produced from concentrated whey which has been partly delactosed by crystallization. It is a saturated lactose solution (45-50% ODB) with a content of protein (26-33% ODB), organic acids and mineral substances (10-12% ODB), the total amount of dry matter is 40%. Due to a high volume of salts and acids, DLW/ML can’t be further reused as an animal feed.
The electrodialysis is an effective solution for reducing the salts and acids concentration after the original content of dry matter is diluted to 18-22% to assure better hydrodynamic conditions of the electrodialysis process. The demineralized product can be reused in lactose production in order to increase the volume of the product. It means that it can be used either directly in liquid or spray dried.

LIQUID SWEET WHEY HEAT STABILITY IMPROVEMENT USING SPECIAL SOFTENING ED
The liquid sweet whey is containing the complex of valuable serum proteins used in infant formula, nutritional supplements, and food industry. The serum proteins may undergo heat-induced degradation affecting its bioavailability and appearance. The most important feature is precipitation and gelation of serum proteins in the presence of the calcium and magnesium ions. Heat treatment of serum protein solutions gives the possibility to introduce on market new “to-go” products with extended shelf life. Calcium and magnesium ions are partially exchanged by monovalent ions using a unique configuration electrodialysis process. Calcium and magnesium partially depleted solution of serum proteins gains higher heat treatment resistance; thus, precipitation and gelation of the serum proteins are avoided.

XYLOSE PURIFICATION
Xylose is a monosaccharide used for furfural production, xylitol production or other purposes. It is mainly produced by acid hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass from various sources.
The electrodialysis (ED) separation process could be used as a part of the DSP for the purification of the hydrolysis product. The purpose of ED is to remove mineral and organic acids and dissolved salts as ash from the feed solution. Nevertheless, the raw solution contains a large amount of other organic compounds which has to be removed prior ED process in order to avoid membrane fouling and thus, loss of performance. The appropriate pretreatment steps are microfiltration and adsorption by active carbon. Electrodialysis itself can typically obtain product quality between a 1 to 4 % ash dry matter basis. Optimization of the ED position in DSP has to be made for each particular case in close cooperation with an industrial partner.
